Filing a Nomination>
The first day a Candidate may file their nomination for the 2022 East Gwillimbury Municipal Election is on Monday, May 2, 2022. To learn more about running in the upcoming municipal election, view the information below or read the Notice of Nomination for Office.
To run for office in East Gwillimbury, as of the date you file your nomination, you must be:
- A Canadian citizen; and
- At least 18 years of age; and
- A resident of the Town of East Gwillimbury, or
- An owner or tenant of land in the Town of East Gwillimbury, or the spouse of such owner or tenant; and
- Not legally prohibited from voting; and
- Not disqualified by any legislation from holding office
- The following people are not eligible to be elected as a Member of Council, or from holding office as a Member of Council:
- Any person not eligible to vote in the municipality;
- An employee of the municipality unless they take an unpaid leave of absence before being nominated, and resigns, if elected to the office;
- A judge of any court;
- A member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, a Senator or a member of the House of Commons; or
- An inmate of a penal or correctional institution under sentence of imprisonment.
- Any person who by reason of any violations of the election campaign financial requirements or violations for not filling the financial statements pursuant to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
To run for school board office, as of the date you file your nomination, you must be:
- 18 years of age or older; and
- A Canadian citizen; and
- A resident within the area of jurisdiction of the board; and
- Eligible to be an elector of that school board for which the person is a candidate; and
- Not disqualified by any legislation from holding office.
A candidate for school board office cannot be a clerk, deputy clerk, treasurer or deputy treasurer of a municipality within the jurisdiction of a board.
The following persons are disqualified from being elected to school board office:
- Any person not eligible to vote in the municipality; or
- An employee of any school board unless he or she takes an unpaid leave of absence before being nominated, and resigns, if elected to the office; or
- A judge of any court; or
- A member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, a Senator or a member of the House of Commons; or
- An inmate of a penal or correctional institution under sentence of imprisonment; or
- A person disqualified for violations of financial requirements or violations of requirements for filing financial information pursuant to the Municipal Elections Act, 1996.
Candidate registration period opens on Monday May 2, 2022.
Candidates cannot spend or raise funds for their election campaign until their nomination has been filed with the Municipal Clerk.
A person may withdraw their nomination by filing a written withdrawal in the clerk’s office,
- before 2 p.m. on nomination day, if the person was nominated under subsection 33 (4) of the Municipal Elections Act;
- before 2 p.m. on the Wednesday following nomination day, if the person was nominated under subsection 33 (5)
Filing a Nomination
If a person wishes to run as a candidate in the 2022 municipal election in East Gwillimbury, they must file a nomination form in-person with the Elections Office. The first day to file a nomination for the next municipal election will be Monday, May 2, 2022.
A person cannot raise or spend money on an election campaign until they have officially filed their nomination with the Town.
The next municipal and school board trustee election will take place on Monday, October 24, 2022, for the following offices:
- Mayor (1)
- Ward Councillor (6)
- York Region District School Board Trustee (1)
- York Catholic District School Board Trustee (1)
- Conseil scolaire Viamonde (1)
- Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir (1)
Candidate Nomination Process
Nominations for office for East Gwillimbury Council will be accepted by appointment only, in-person at the Civic Centre. Appointments are approximately one hour and may be scheduled during regular business hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday to Friday, between Monday, May 2 and Thursday, August 18 and between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Nomination Day, Friday, August 19.
Nominations may be filed in person or by an agent with the Municipal Clerk beginning May 2, 2022, until August 18, 2022, during regular business hours (Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) and on Nomination Day, August 19, 2022 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
In accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, nominations must be filed using the prescribed forms, accompanied by the prescribed nomination filing fee and nominations for an office on a council must be endorsed by at least 25 people (original signatures are required for all forms filed). The filing fee is $200 for the office of Mayor and $100.00 for all other offices. The filing fee is payable by cash, debit, certified cheque or money order.
If a nomination for a candidate is filed by an agent, a letter must be submitted at the time of filing which authorizes the agent to file on behalf of the candidate. The letter must be signed by the candidate and commissioned or notarized by a person authorized under the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act or Notaries Act. In addition to this letter, an agent must also provide a copy of the candidate's ID to be retained on file.
No person who proposes to be a candidate may solicit or accept contributions for election purposes or incur campaign expenses until a nomination paper has been filed.

To file a nomination, you must provide:
- Form 1 Nomination Paper
- Form 2 Endorsement of Nomination
- Identification, including name, qualifying East Gwillimbury address and signature
- Nomination filing fee, $100 for Councillor and $200 for Mayor
Original signatures are required for all forms filed with Election Services. Agents who file on behalf of a candidate must provide all of the above, and their own identification.
